Another study I did a while back of a painting by Julius Stewart. I didn’t have a goal in mind when I started this study.
Anthony Jones posted a video about how to do studies properly (https://youtu.be/8kfK46nruKM). He is absolutely right that a study should involve an active analysis by the artist, especially if one is starting out with drawing and painting. At some point though, once a skill level has been reached, mindless copying can become a relaxing way for an artist to unwind. Of course, there is still analyzing going on in my brain, but instead of it being conscious in my head, it is more of a subconscious noise. I essentially treat my master studies like one does when they are doing “Plein Air” painting. I observe and paint. It is simple and fun.
