My nephew just started doing a watercolor class. Because of this I was inspired to go through my dusty collection of old college work to see if I can find a bunch of watercolors that I did for Professor Millie’s class. Sadly, I couldn’t find a whole lot. But I did run into this old fella;
I did this piece pretty much right after I finished the one watercolor piece I reviewed in an earlier article; http://edgarej.com/throwback-thursday-03-26-2020/. Clearly I was still inspired by what I did with the first project that I tried to emulate what I learned for the second project. Since the first project had a grid composition, I decided to do the same for this artwork. I also tried to reference the “Marilyn Diptych” by Andy Warhol. That’s clearly seen with the repeated female face. Why oh why I have a snarky comment about Andy in this piece though, I really don’t know. I can’t for the life of me remember why I was even trying to make some form of commentary in the first place.
Anyways… compare this piece with the other piece, and I still think the original wins. Even though I am a representational artist at heart and definitely not an abstract practitioner, I still love the abstraction of my first watercolor project. This one just seems too much of a copycat.
Anyhoo, I’ll be seeing you guys around.
